2008/09 Concerto Competition for
Symphony and Philharmonia Orchestras

Deadline for entering contest is September 14, 2008

Concerto Competition Application

The Concerto Competition is open to all Symphony and Philharmonia members in good standing (all forms turned in and tuition fees up to date). Soloists are selected to perform with their respective orchestra at one of our scheduled concerts. There is a non-refundable entry fee of $50. The Symphony and Philharmonia conductors must approve all repertoire beforehand for suitability of performance by their respective orchestras as well as the availability of orchestral parts. The number of concerto winners is dependent on the season's repertoire. This year the competition will be held in October, the date to be announced.

Rules:

  1. Open to Symphony and Philharmonia members only.
  2. You may play a single-movement work (like Saint-Saëns Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso) or one movement of a multi-movement concerto.
  3. Submit the Concerto Competition Form by September 14, 2008 along with the $50 entry fee.
  4. You will be notified of your acceptance to audition by telephone within two weeks of submitting the form.
  5. You must time your piece accurately, including all tuttis, and submit the timing with your entry.
  6. Movements must be 10 minutes or less.
  7. Works must be memorized.
  8. Piano accompanists must be used.
  9. For the purposes of the audition, your accompanist must cut long orchestral tuttis.
  10. Each audition will last approximately eight minutes. The panel may interrupt you if your piece, as prepared for audition, lasts longer than 8 minutes.
  11. The audition schedule, once finalized, will be strictly adhered to and you will forfeit your opportunity to play if you are tardy.
  12. No taped auditions will be accepted.
  13. Winners of the Concerto Competition must wait one full season before applying again.
